We are combining the words of two
different anointings of Jesus into one scene.
Characters
Mary (anointing)
Martha (serving)
Simon (dressed as Pharisee)
Lazarus
John
Judas—speaks just as in the Passion Play
Other Disciples and people around the table eating
(Everyone is there except JESUS and a couple of DISCIPLES)
MARTHA: I give thanks to the Lord.
MARY: It is true. His faithful love endures forever.
JOHN: Yes, we have much to be thankful for.
LAZARUS: I will not die, but live and proclaim what my God has done.
(JESUS and other DISCIPLES enter)
Embrace and sit for dinner. Martha serves.
Eat for a little bit and talk to one another then Mary begins to anoint Jesus’ head. When she touches his hair, everyone freezes and…
SIMON says: “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner."
(Everyone moves again after the word “sinner” and Mary moves to Jesus’ feet and continues to anoint him)
JESUS answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Tell me, teacher," he said. "Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[6] and the other fifty. (Jesus asks from Judas coins) Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?"
SIMON replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven."
"You have judged correctly," Jesus said. Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little." Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"
Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
JUDAS: But This is wasteful. That oil could have been sold for 300 pieces of silver; and given to the poor.
JESUS: Judas, why do you make trouble for this woman? It is a fine thing she has done for me. The poor will always be among you, but you will not always have me. Wherever in all the world, the Gospel is proclaimed, what this woman has done will be told as her memorial. When Mary poured this oil on my body, it was her way of preparing me, for burial.
(JUDAS EXITS)
DISCIPLE: Lord, “Lord, where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
JESUS: “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.
14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time draweth nigh: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
JESUS gives thanks and then everyone exits
