People of the Passion Play - Jim Sellers

1/9/2024

Jim Sellers is a native of Cañon City, Colorado, known for its Royal Gorge, extensive natural hiking paths, rock climbing and whitewater rafting.
He is one of our work/campers here at the Passion Play. You may see him at the welcome booth talking with the visitors and giving instructions on navigating through our many attractions on campus.
Before the play was officially opened, Jim began working for the Smith Foundation taking care of the animals. In 1968, on the night of the first performance of the Great Passion Play, Jim’s first role was one of the Sanhedrin guards. “For the next 3 years, I played all the male characters except for the part of Jesus.” Jim recalls. And for each of those years he got a trophy for being the most versatile actor.
When asked about how he got involved with the non- profit, he recalls, “As a sideline Christian, I got more information about the organization and wanted to be a part of it. I visited with the initial leadership and they encouraged me to try it out.”
Jim loves to read, especially westerns by Louis L’Amour and any book that brings out New Testament characters. When asked what Jim loves most about being here, he simply replies, “I love people and sharing stories together.” We at the Great Passion Play can tell you are a people person, Jim. Thank you for making our visitors feel welcome and treating them like family.

People of the Passion Play - David & Lisa Owens

1/9/2024

David & Lisa Owens are both natives of Oklahoma, known for its rich Native American History, oil production and agriculture. They are two of our volunteer/work campers who together make our campus more beautiful. Lisa saw a post on Facebook that we needed help putting up Christmas lights, both she and David agreed to go. “We were there for 9 days wrapping 70 pillars and putting lights on , Christmas trees,” recalls Lisa. “We spent our 39th anniversary volunteering with whatever they needed, doing cards to pass out was one of the duties they gave us. And before the new season opened in 2022, we were blessed with a camper to stay in while we are here.” “Kent asked us to maintain the rain bird irrigation system in 2021-2022. We can do other things also, but the landscape area at the front gate is what people see first,” says David, “so we spend a lot of time there keeping it looking attractive for the visitors.

Lisa started as a cast member in 2022 as servant 1 and or 2 and she is open to try new roles this next season. In 2023 they felt a need to bring this community of work/campers together, so they started “The Gathering,” on Thursday evenings. “It’s a time where the work campers can fellowship. We sometimes get busy working and forget to build relationships,” says Lisa. “Anyone who wants to can bring a snack. We usually sing and maybe play games or have a devotional time, share testimonies, it’s a 'gathering with the saints' time. We want to get to know those who we’ll be spending eternity with.”

They love reading the Bible and both have favorite passages in Isaiah, Lisa’s is 65:24 and David’s is 40:31.
When asked what they like best about the non-profit, they both agree they are dedicated to bringing the gospel to this community. We at the Passion Play appreciate what you two are doing here. Your love and commitment to sharing the gospel in this area has been amazing.

The SawStop® Contractor Saw offers versatility and safety.
36-INCH T-GLIDE FENCE ASSEMBLY: The 36-inch T-Glide Fence & Rail are made of heavy-gauge steel for sure lockdown and reliably square cutting for years without deflection.
CONFIGURABILITY: Over 150 unique configurations, makes the Contractor Saw the most configurable SawStop saw. Adding a mobile base, sliding crosscut table or router table, are just a few of the ways to make this your ideal saw.
UNIVERSAL PERFORMANCE: The Contractor Saw offers versatility, reliability and safety for a variety of users. The cast iron table top (Cast Iron Wing Assembly, CNS-CIWA, sold separately) creates a better-than-hybrid performance in the shop at an affordable price.
SAWSTOP PATENTED SAFETY SYSTEM: Stops a spinning blade on contact with skin. The blade stops in less than 5 milliseconds, and drops below the table, minimizing a potentially life-altering injury to a mere scratch.
RELIABILITY: The Control Box houses the on-off switch, power paddle, and on-board computer, and constantly checks that all systems are working to reliably keep you safe.
UNMATCHED QUALITY: The trunnion and arbor are built for precision, strength and stability. Poly v-ribbed belts reduce vibration and help ensure a great cut. Table flatness is measured diagonally at 0. 010” maximum gap.

People of the Passion Play: Carol

Carol Cash is from Houston, Texas, known for its International Chili Cook-Off since 1967. This, however, didn’t prevent Carol from moving to Arkansas in 2013 to work at the Great Passion Play, a non-profit ministry. “When I visited in the 90’s with my family,” Carol recalls, “I knew I wanted to work there. I loved the uncompromising message of the Play and what it stood for. I felt the Lord leading me to be a part of that.”

She was grateful for the bus ministry that was available to pick her up for church since her family wasn’t going at the time, but credits no one except the Holy Spirit, who drew her to her faith in Jesus at the age of 13.

Working at the Bible Museum is a great fit for Carol, “It gives me opportunities to share my story and pray with people.” She sees many visitors who have come back year after year and some, every couple of months. Her two favorite people at the Play are Kent Butler and Joe Smith, “The light of the Lord shines through them.” Carol considers the staff and volunteers at the Great Passion Play a second family to her. And we all here at the Passion Play certainly feel the same way about Carol.

People of the Passion Play: Theresa

Theresa G-H is an outgoing native of New York who’s never met a stranger. She’s a woman of many talents and doesn’t do anything halfway. Theresa has many loves, including her 2 sons and 3 grandchildren, but her greatest love is for her Master and Savior, Jesus Christ. “Everything else is secondary,” says Theresa.

She came to the Great Passion Play 3 years ago serving as a volunteer. This past year has been challenging for Theresa, as life sometimes takes us where we never thought we would go.

Through much fasting and prayer, the Lord Jesus led her here. “I have confidence in Him that this is where I’m supposed to be for now,” she states.

Picture
Theresa considers working in the information booth a ministry. She enjoys welcoming all the visitors who come to see the play and inquire about the Christ of the Ozarks statue. For many of our guests, she finds they are unaware of all the attractions we have to offer besides the Passion Play and statue. She encourages everyone to take our Holy Land tour and spend some time in the variety of museums we offer.

Theresa often quotes Luke 12:48, “To whom much is given, much is required.” Trusting in this scripture, she never tires of serving others and regards the opportunity as an honor.

You will see Theresa in many roles here on campus, acting on stage as servant girl is one of them. She’s a fast learner and looks forward to playing a new role for season 2024. Thank you Theresa for your hard work, your dedication doesn’t go unnoticed.
